One of the most common questions before CDL training: "Can I even get a CDL with my background?" The good news — many people who think they're disqualified actually aren't.
Permanent Disqualifications
- Using a commercial vehicle to commit a felony involving controlled substances
- Causing a fatality through negligent CMV operation
- Two or more serious offenses involving a CMV (in some circumstances)
Temporary Disqualifications
1-Year Ban
- First DUI/DWI conviction in any vehicle
- Refusing a breathalyzer test
- Leaving the scene of an accident
- Using a vehicle to commit a felony
3-Year Ban
- Any of the above offenses while transporting hazardous materials
Criminal History
A criminal record does not automatically disqualify you from getting a CDL. State DMVs don't typically run criminal background checks for CDL issuance. However, HazMat endorsements require a TSA background check which does flag certain felonies — and individual employers run their own checks.
Medical Disqualifications
- Vision worse than 20/40 even with correction
- Insulin-dependent diabetes (waiver available)
- Epilepsy with seizures in past 8 years
- Certain cardiovascular conditions
Don't Assume — Ask First
Many people who think they can't get a CDL actually can. CDL schools deal with these questions daily. Talk to one before giving up — you might be surprised.
