The HazMat endorsement (H) is one of the most valuable additions to your CDL — and one of the most misunderstood. Here's exactly how to get it in 2026.
What Is the HazMat Endorsement?
The HazMat endorsement allows you to transport hazardous materials including flammable liquids, chemicals, explosives, and radioactive materials. Combined with a Tanker endorsement (N), you get the coveted X endorsement — one of the highest-paying specialties in trucking.
Requirements
- Must hold a valid CDL
- Must be a US citizen or lawful permanent resident
- Pass the HazMat knowledge test at your state DMV
- Complete TSA Threat Assessment (background check + fingerprinting)
- Complete ELDT HazMat theory training (required since 2022)
Complete ELDT HazMat Online
The HazMat ELDT theory requirement can be completed online at ELDT365.com for just $50. The course covers HazMat regulations, placarding, emergency response, and handling procedures.
The TSA Background Check Process
- Apply at a TSA-approved fingerprinting location
- Pay the $86.50 fee (federal)
- Fingerprinting takes about 15 minutes
- TSA reviews your background (typically 30-60 days)
- If approved, your state DMV adds the endorsement
What Disqualifies You?
- Certain felony convictions (especially terrorism-related)
- Unlawful immigration status
- Mental illness adjudications in some cases
Many people who think they'll be disqualified actually pass. Don't assume — apply and find out.
Pay Bump
HazMat drivers earn $5,000 – $15,000 more per year than standard CDL drivers. The endorsement pays for itself within weeks.
